After the incident on the quiet street in the perfect housea poem by Peter Menkin
written 2001
Daddy went into the nightin the nice neighborhood.Too much stained glass, making colors, cutting shapes.I guess. He was an artist. The door was left open. She yelled something, his wifedid. When I passed the houseyears ago, soon after, there was somethingthat happened there.Sad, bad night. The worst I saw him dowas put his boots up on the glasstable in my living room.He was larger than life, wanting to embrace eventhe Bay.Pick it up! Golden Gate Bridge, and all. His!He went to Berkeley, and thenyou could hitchhike to the Universityeveryday to your job.Ride share. After the incident donebefore the children,he took a job as a deckhandon the ferryboat.Madness. Disaster. His mother was a doctor,M.D. type, and so was hisfather, M.D. type. Shetalked to him, in thefamily home--He threw her televisionset out the second storywindow.End conversation.I hope he remarriedand had five more children.
