The Chimney by the house near the road...(2001)

poem by Peter Menkin

What attentions the chimney gets
on Magnolia street, where the house
finds workmen visiting to perform
specialized chimney type things.

Each day I pass, wondering about
the sparks, and the red brick,
and what is the matter with
your chimney. Days pass; the workman
continue on in repair offering
company and a comforting reality

that the chimney by the side
of the house shall be fired.
This is a new life, to start
the chimney living again. Chimney,

it waits on the workmen. Happy
are the passerby who
have this scene in their lives.

Soon the job will be done. Wait
and stand among the other houses
and their chimneys for tomorrow;
then to be more sounds of people, dwelling.
