Cunning Mary, Manic Mary...

poem by Peter Menkin

Happy
Mary was happy
joyful, so it seemed,
but really expanded into
broad strokes.

I knew her when
she was always bigger
than life,
what the doctor's call
manic.

Tears hid behind the
happy.
She was this way,
that,
and ever cunning.

She had a way
to get through life,
it was by cunning.
I considered this credit,
to survival.
