Confederate Grave Rededication

Tuesday, June 7th 2011 @ 11:27 PM (not yet rated)    post viewed 1607 times

On June 5, 2011, a graves rededication ceremony was held at the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  The 31 Confederate Veterans buried in the church graveyard now all have UDC Iron Crosses properly in place.  Service details are known for all but a few of these soldiers.

The program included reenactors, honor guard, musicians and a 21 gun salute.  "Bonnie Blue" was played by the ladies on flute and piccolo, the bagpiper piped "Amazing Grace", and a bugler blew "Taps" following the reading of the names and the musket volley.

SCV Camp Commander Randy McGuinn officiated the formalities, with invocation by Camp Chaplain John Messer.  Parish Rector Ned Morris gave a talk about the importance of remembering history, heritage and commemorating the heroism of those who served. The keynote speaker was Mark Simpson, SCV South Carolina Division Commander.  Young men from two Boy Scout Troops participated in the presentation and retiring of the colors.

Approximately 80 people attended the Sunday afternoon service, and a number of them remained afterwards to take a self-guided tour of the graveyard using a brochure that had been published by the SCV Camp.
