Checkpoint Zero
“Have you ever been involved in something that takes you over against your own good judgement? Even though you know it’s dangerous you keep going as if that something has got its own self-destructive momentum and you’re powerless to stop it"

It's a quote from the main character of the play, but it could equally be the words of writer and director, Don Mamouney.

This play is passionate, powerful and prophetic, yet it is of course totally politically incorrect, and I can see Don writing these lines and saying to himself, "Do I really dare to say this?"

Speaking the truth about the oppression of the Palestinian people is dangerous territory for any journallst, commentator or playwrite, and the temptation will always be to try to appear 'even-handed' at the expense of the truth, and so dillute the horror of the occupation. Thank God Don had the courage to tell it as it is.

All credit to Don. All credit to the cast who tell their story with power and passion. And all credit to Sidetrack Theatre for shining this light into what is surely the darkest and most misunderstood region of our world.
