No Prophet is Welcome in his Own Town
"Jesus left that place and went back to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were utterly amazed. They said, "Where did this man get all these things? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What great miracles are being done by his hands! This is the builder, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon, isn't it? His sisters are here with us, aren't they?" And they were offended by him." (Mark 6:1-4) The relationship between Jesus and his earthly family was always a tricky one. At times it seemed that both were an embarrassment to the other! Why is it that familiarity always seems to breed contempt? How would we have felt about Jesus had we known HIm all His earthly life? And is the modern quest for the 'historical Jesus' a genuine attempt to know HIm better, or rather an attempt to de-mystify the impenetrable aspects of His character?
