For Australian and New Zealanders, ANZAC Day is chief day of rememberance of those who have fallen in wars fought for their country. The original ANZACs fought at Gallipoli in 1915, but ANZAC Day has subsequently become a day of rememberance for those who have fallen in all wars.
As to World War I, from a population of fewer than 5 million, 416,809 Australian men enlisted as volunteers (almost 10% of the total population) of which over 60,000 were killed and 155,000 wounded, meaning that more than half of the guys who went off to war either came back wounded or didn't come back at all.
