Subject: Aspect ratio of member photos

Here on the forums most pictures are vertical.

Why can't we request the obvious be done for the club member directory photos.

I appreciate that for photo gallerys landscape mode will be more popular, but they call it portrait mode for a reason. Most portraits are oriented vertically.

I recommend we change the member photos to 200px tall and 150 px wide.

I second this request. Alternatively, have a maximum size, but don't resize the image in the display field if the size doesn't exactly match the requirements.

I have to admit this is the first system I've seen that forces a resize on icons to meet a specific aspect ratio.

Seems like this should be a no brainer. Can someone reply why this can't be done? Considering the sites are professional in nature, virtually ALL pictures are portrait. For the less computer savvy or those who do not have software to adjust, it's a frustrating exercise.

Thanks,

Most people who take pictures with digital camers take them landscape and the is what the designer made the member images.

IF you are looking for a free photo editor you might want to try paint.net http://www.getpaint.net/

I'm sure that most of us are reasonably aware of how to modify images. This answer begs the question, however, of why this is the only website that I know of that forces a particular aspect ratio and dynamically RESIZES the images we provide instead of simply enforcing a maximum height and/or width?

I assume that what you're saying is actually "tough, deal with it, we aren't changing anything to suit the people who use it". Which is your prerogative of course, even if it's an odd decision in my eyes.

Brian, I have to agree with others on this one. I'm not necessarily html savvy & certainly appreciate the availability of freetoasthost to our club at no cost.

However, that ratio just doesn't seem to work for headshots. I have tried to edit several members' photos in both MS Paint and in Microsoft Office Photo Manager. When I try to specify 200 x 150 pixels (wide x tall), it still adjusts the numbers, so the pictures are still "fun house mirror" like. For example, one try yielded 133 x 200 & another was 107 x 160. (I even saved the auto-resized version of my profile picture here thinking it would meet the 200 x 150 criteria now, but it still looked distorted on my ftf member profile - so I deleted it, AGAIN).

To take really nice professional shots of members and have them look so horrible defeats the purpose of having this feature. I think visitors to the sites want to see pictures, but most members don't want to look "short & fat."

Users can (and should) compress the files to save server space, but can't we have a flexible format option?

Lori
