Q. When uploading some videos I get a "ERROR-UNDEFINED-io" error. Why?

A. The "ERROR-UNDEFINED-io" means that you had a broken connection between the server and your local PC.  It happens most often on large file uploads, but should not happen at all assuming the connection is clean between the two points.

Some ways to minimize the chances of getting this error:

  1. Do large uploads using a hardline connection, i.e. stay away from wireless connections when uploading large files.
  2. If you are using a cable Internet provider, try to avoid busy times of day to upload large files.  Cable uses shared bandwidth and their network could become unstable and reset often during high user load times.
  3. If you are uploading several files, do one file at a time.

You can just try again at a different time.  If you get the error once, it does not mean you will keep getting it.  However, if you want to get a file uploaded right away, there is another solution -- the HTML backup uploader.  The HTML uploader does not use flash, so blips in the connection do not effect the upload.

To activate the HTML backup uploader:

  1. go to your video / mp3 application
  2. click on your user preferences icon
  3. check the option for HTML uploader
  4. go back to your application
  5. ignore the flash uploader, and use the HTML uploader to select and upload your file

If this is an ongoing problem, you may want to contact your ISP about a connectivity issue.

For what it's worth... I was having this problem continually and I was ready to first smash my computer and second cancel my igroop because it relies heavily on the need to upload video's on tight deadlines... I tried wired vs wireless, cable modem connection vs T1 connection, early in the morning vs late at night, 1 file at a time vs multiple files. Nothing helped. Even tried the backup HTML uploader, it also failed. This was on 2 separate computers both running Windows NT and IE 7. Then... I attempted an upload from my Mac using Firefox. Same wireless network as above and same cable modem internet connection as above. I copied a 22 MB file with flash uploader with no issue. I got more bold and copied 3 files totalling about 94 MB, again no issue. I have yet to have a timeout or connection broken since the change. Machine with XP and IE7 still fails, Mac with Firefox never an issue. Not sure if this is a browser issue or a windows issue, but I'm sticking with what works for me.

I'm at that exact point (smash and cancel). Unfortunately I can't get into my Lenox with Firefox to try it.

I have already tried wired vs. wireless, at 5am in the morning on Sunday (virtually no traffic), and one file at a time. Same problem persists.

What I could not understand was the slow speed to upload (23K to 40K), while other uploads were going at 700K or faster.

I will have to try a remote connection where the infrastructure is better. No Mac available in my environment, so I will have to see which files are successful for upload in the previous environment, which did upload several files for me. If not, then I will resort only to giving a link to my box.net account to igroops, which, in turn, will have Ryan and Bo download the files at a higher speed.
