Missed the International Convention? Talking Toastmasters has the inside scoop! In today's episode, Bo (who attended the International Convention) and Ryan (who did not) speak with fellow Toastmaster from District 31, Sherri Raftery (who incidently also attended the convention...and yes, she is the same Sherri I mentioned in the blog post below!)

We talk about the International speech contest (Yea Vikas!), meeting Toastmasters from around the world, being "juicy", the differences between the International Convention and district/regional conferences, the hot and steamy climate in Phoenix, AZ...and we get a little too much information about the apparently hot and steamy dance floor at the dinner dance! (insert shocked smiley face emoticon here)

Hi Rich - I like your topic and I your question!   Wink

"Is it more important to cater to the audience, or to give a message we want to deliver"?

I think it is VERY important for the speaker to "CATER" to the audience.  Not that the speaker should compromise the "MESSAGE" - but it is important for the speaker to "KNOW HIS/HER AUDIENCE" and to adapt the speech accordingly.

Otherwise, the audience will not be "receptive" and it will loose your intended "message".  What you may say with one group you may not say with another. Just like in standup comedy - some jokes work with one crowd but will offend another crowd.

Chose your delivery according to your audience which includes age, sex, race, religion, region, and on and on...

I love watching Joel on T.V. - I bet he was very dynamic LIVE!! Thanks for sharing.

Signed Sherri Raftery, M.Ed.

Hi Bo/Ryan It is nice to hear your interview with Sherri for the World Championship. Overall, the quality of this presentation is well organized and structured. Good descriptive information, and clarity. Vikas must be flooded with emails with congratulations. I sent him one this morning and offered to buy him lunch. He has practiced at our clubs for a couple times and received good constructive feedback. I am so happy for him. Now that he is the Champ, we may not effort to invite him back to our club. Cheers!

Hi Bo/Ryan, I recently joined your iGroop and thoroughly enjoy your MP3 interviews. You seem to have a very active district up in New England! Congrats! I am in District 14 in Georgia in my club in Savannah (www.savannahtoastmasters705.com). I look forward to many months of inspiration from you guys :) ! Andy
